The Journey to Self-Understanding

Social Issues Oct 19, 2024 Mitch Dyer

In my experience, the key difference is the depth of self-reflection these individuals have undergone. Put simply, it’s about how well someone knows themselves. You can’t determine where you fit in the world if you don’t first recognize the essence of who you are. This is the “internal” aspect of the equation. Think of it like a puzzle - you need to understand both the shape of your piece and the overall puzzle to know where you fit.

The External Dimension

The second key difference is how these individuals apply their self-knowledge. Once you know who you are on a deep level, it brings with it a confidence and resolve that allows you to express that in the world. This “external” aspect is crucial because it’s about finding your space to thrive. Often, it’s through experimentation and life experiences that we carve out that space. The process of self-discovery and real-world exploration usually occurs together. For example, travel often shows us new things about the world and ourselves, helping us see where we fit in.

Continuing the puzzle analogy, it’s like figuring out the exact details of your puzzle piece while also piecing together the rest of the puzzle to see how everything connects. This leads us to another question:

Why Is It So Hard to Find Our Place?

Some people seem to know who they are and what they want from life from an early age, but this is rare. For most of us, external influences shape our sense of self from a young age. We’re told how we should behave, what we should aim for, and how we should fit into society’s expectations. Criticism often comes from authority figures like parents, teachers, and peers, and this continues well into adulthood. These external voices often drown out our own inner voice, leaving us disconnected from our true selves.

But here’s the thing: You are a unique individual, just like everyone else. If you don’t know yourself deeply, it’s unlikely the outside world does. And when you do know yourself, you’ll see that much of the criticism from others is misplaced.

The Path to Confidence and Clarity

It’s essential to take the time to really get to know who you are. Given the strong influence of outside voices, this can be a challenging and uncomfortable journey. But having gone through this process myself (and continuing to do so), I can confidently say that the clarity and freedom it brings are worth the effort. Many of us haven’t yet done this work, which is why we view those who have as “fortunate.” But in reality, they’ve simply done the inner work to achieve that confidence

Final Thoughts

The main difference between most people and those who seem to effortlessly pursue their passions lies in the level of self-exploration. That unwavering confidence, which comes from deeply knowing yourself, allows you to follow your interests, find your place in the world, and resist the inevitable criticism. Invest in yourself. Get to know who you are. If you’re unsure where to start, consider working with a life coach.
